She was originally born in St. Louis before moving to New York City a short time later. In 1991 she was awarded an art bachelor's degree at Barnard College. It was the very same time that she began working as a waitress in An American Place. But Guarnaschelli's experience in the kitchen began when she watched her mother experiment with various recipes at home, while she was editing cookbooks. Her career began under Larry Forgione before working in various Los Angeles, New York and France-based restaurants. Guarnaschelli was later appointed as executive chef for Butter. Guarnaschelli battled Cat Cora on Food Network's Iron Chef America 2007 Farmers Market Battle. The following year, she was a contestant as the season's third runner up in The Next Iron Chef, as well as an Iron Chef judge ever since. Also, she lost in The Food Network Challenge Ultimate Thanksgiving Feast. She was promoted to sous-chef for Iron chef Geoffrey Zakarian following the 4th season of The Next Iron Chef.
